Ivorytype: the early painted photo on fake
ivory
The ivorytype is an obscure early ‘hard’ photograph. The photographic image was printed onto fake
ivory and framed. It usually was hand
painted to have the appearance of a miniature painting. It was invented in
London in 1855 and was most popular in the mid to late 19th century. Ivorytypes
are rare.
