Continuing Education Course: Introduction to Identifying Photographs
Course Overview:
This self directed, home study course is an introduction to identifying and dating
photographs from the 1800s to today. This includes judging the authenticity of
photos and identifying reprints and fakes. Photographs covered range from Daguerreotypes
to Kodak snapshots, wirephotos to cabinet cards. The course is good for appraisers, collectors,
dealers, geneologists, art historians and historians. The course is overseen and graded by
David Rudd Cycleback, photograph authentication advisor to Beckett Media, writer for the
Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography and author of Judging the Authenticity of Photographs.
How the Course is Run:
This self paced course involves reading the downloadable pdf textbook, doing the homework included
at the end the textbook and then passing a short final test.
The reading and homework is done on your own and at your own pace. You can download
the text and homework right now and start, or just look it over. When you finish and feel you have answered
well the homework questions, you can submit the homework with the $30 grading fee. You will then receive
via email a short test that you must finish and email back your answers within 7 days. The final
test is shorter and easier than the homework, and is mostly intended to make sure the student did
the reading (The homework questions are available to everyone, while each test is unique to the
student). The week will be more than enough time to finish the questions.
If the student has finished the homework and passed the final test, he or she will receive credit
for finishing and passing the course. The student will have demonstrated he has understood the material.
