This guide is about
making sound judgments concerning the authenticity, or lack thereof,
of pre-1930 baseball cards. This includes identifying reprints,
counterfeits, forgeries and fakes. While a small booklet hardly
intends to cover it all or make each reader into
an auction house expert, it offers information and techniques
that should make anyone a smarter collector. Even learning a
few here-and-there techniques will allow the reader to detect
more fakes and be more confident about his purchases.
This guide is only a supplement to your personal education,
knowledge and experience. This education includes following and
reading about the hobby, handling and looking at lots of cards
and asking lots of questions of dealers, fellow collectors and
experts. There is no replacement for hands on experience. With
time the collector will know about common fakes and get a feel
for authenticity, age, pricing and rarity. Besides, half the
fun of collecting is learning about the material, its history
and the hobby.
Making sound judgments requires intelligence and objectivity.
While experts make educated guesses, authentication never involves
pre-determined results or rash opinions.
